Germany defender Schlotterbeck out of World Cup

Germany rearguard star Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the remainder of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ with an ankle problem. The centre-back sustained the knock during his side's 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday.

While he will be unable to compete in the remainder of Germany’s contests, he will stay with the squad.

Manager Nagelsmann commented the 26-year-old will be “sorely missed” and continued: “He is an notable rearguard star, as well as has excellent build-up play. It could have been his World Cup.

"The fact that he’s staying with the squad for now is a good sign. He also has an important influence on the side off the field of play.”

Nagelsmann is confident, however, Germany have the quality in depth to cope with his absence.

“With Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rudiger, Waldemar Anton, as well as Malick Thiaw, we’re still very well-equipped in central defence,” he commented.

In an Instagram post, meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund star Schlotterbeck wrote: “What matters now is the side. They deserve the full support of all Germans. Let’s stand together, as well as show that we’re behind this side in good times, as well as bad and support them on their journey to the World Cup title.”
