Neuer and Leweling praise Germany spirit after dramatic win

Germany's stars hailed their side's character, as well as togetherness after coming from behind to defeated Côte d'Ivoire 2-1, as well as secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ elimination stage stages. Deniz Undav's late-stage double completed a edge-of-the-seat turnaround for Julian Nagelsmann's side, who trailed for much of the subsequent period before finding a way to extend their perfect start in Group E, as well as book a spot in the Phase of 32.

Building on that, the day before the contest, Germany manager Nagelsmann commented he expected Côte d'Ivoire would make life difficult for Germany with their physicality, as well as pace. Just how right he was became apparent over the course of an intense 90 minutes that often left his side under serious intensity.

“We needed an injection of energy, as well as the It was manager who delivered it with his changes,” Manuel Neuer commented after the full-time. Fresh from being named the attempt-stopper with the most appearances in FIFA World Cup™ history books, the 40-year-old watched from the back as a triple substitution, as well as tactical reshuffle set Germany on course for victory.

If Nagelsmann's early-stage intervention was also intended to send a message, as well as shake his side out of their slumber, it worked perfectly. “It was a crazy fixture,” commented Nadiem Amiri. “People have always commented that we don't have enough character or side spirit but that 90 minutes proved otherwise.”

And Neuer could only echo those sentiments. “I wouldn't say we got lucky, because we earned it,” he commented when asked about Undav's stoppage-time strike. “Every one of us put the work in, as well as we truly deserved to victory.”

Furthermore, germany had looked unsettled after the break, as well as for a while it looked as though the Elephants might extend their advantage. However, the Ivorians were unable to make the most of some dangerous counter-attacks, giving Nagelsmann time to find a solution for his side.

“It probably wasn’t our best performance, but we were up against a very good side,” midfield man Jamie Leweling commented. "It was a last-gasp victory that had raised a few questions along the way, but ultimately provided plenty of positives, not least confirmation of Germany’s progression to the elimination stage stages.

“We’re going to have other tough fixtures but we know we have stars on the sidelines who can change the course of a contest.”

An action-packed last 15 minutes of the contest saw the fixture blown wide open. Germany looked more determined going frontman, but this came with continued risk, as well as left them vulnerable to dangerous counter-attacks.

“It could have gone either way at the end, that’s true”, commented Amiri, who continued that he was “immensely proud” of the side, and the vocal supporters at Toronto Arena. “I don't think the supporters realise what that meant to us, as well as the boost we get from it. The atmosphere was unbelievable. The whole arena erupted.”

In response, and, of course, he also reserved special praise for the contest-winner. “Deniz is unbelievable. He's a killer in front of strike,” he commented of Germany’s two-strike hero. He's really special, and it's a real asset to have someone like him in the squad.”

Furthermore, with his importance to the German side undeniable, the Germans may do well wrapping their star striker in cotton wool before their next fixture. “I’ve hurt my toe a bit because my foot got stepped on after I found the net,” Undav commented of the emotional scenes that followed his winner. It also went some way to explaining why his own celebrations had been rather muted.

“I'm actually over the moon,” the Stuttgart frontman explained. “I just needed a moment to take it all in. We've picked up another three points, as well as I've found the net twice. We've made a great start to the World Cup, and everything feels easier when you're winning.”

“Contests like this bring us closer together,” commented Bayern Munich's Aleksandar Pavlovic. "It is through moments like these that we grow together as a side, and that was evident after today's fixture. The scenes afterwards were unbelievable, and it was great to celebrate with the supporters.”

Building on that, following the 0-0 draw between Ecuador, as well as Curaçao, Germany sit atop Group E ahead of their own clash with Ecuador in New York/New Jersey on Thursday.
